PETALING JAYA – The pre-season tour to Asia andb Australia is important for English Premier (EPL) side Liverpool Football Club (LFC) to improvise tactics said its manager.
Manager Brendan Rodgers who has changed half the squad that finished sixth in the EPL standings said the new signings were still adopting and adjusting to the playing style of Liverpool and pitch conditions.
“The ultimate goal of the pre season is to maintain fitness, to come back with real conditions…and to improvise technique and tactics, to continue improving the dynamics and understanding in the team.
“Last season was a disappointment for us, we had to ensure we brought in quality players with ambition to help us improve,” he told reporters at the club’s arrival press conference, here today.
The 42-year-old Irishman who was amazed with the Malaysia’s fanatical supporters, would lead ‘The Reds’ against a Malaysia Selection on Friday night at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil during an international friendly as part of the clubs pre season tour.
“Very important for us to travel around the world and meet the fans, feeling great talking to the supporters across Asia and Malaysia, real pleasure to be here,” he said.
Meanwhile, The Reds newly appointed captain Jordan Henderson said he was prepared to take up the honour and fill the boots of club legend, Steven Gerrard.
“The biggest thing for me is always putting the team first. He is a great leader,” he said.
The Merseyside club started their pre-season tour by gunning down Thai All Stars 4-0 in Bangkok on July 14 before defeating A-League sides, Brisbane Roar 2-1 on Friday and beating Adelaide United 2-0 yesterday in Australia.
The Reds will continue their journey to Northern Europe for their last pre-season tour match against Finnish side, HJK Helsinki on Aug 1 at the 10,770 capacity Sonera Stadium in Helsinki.
In a separate event, Liverpool’s newly signed, Nathaniel Clyne expressed hope of performing his very best with the new team.
“It is great to be a part Liverpool, one of the best English Premier League (EPL) teams. Before this, I’ve been watching the EPL for a long time and I’m happy to be playing in the league now,” said Clyne, who admires Liverpool’s former skipper Gerrard.
Clyne, together with his team mates Alberto Moreno and Lazar Markovic were at the Mid Valley Mega Mall for a meet and greet the fans session today.
About 1,500 fans, local and foreign, gathered at the shopping mall as early as 10 am although the event started at 3.30 pm, to meet their favourite football idols.
To date, about 60,000 tickets priced at RM58 (student), RM88, RM158 and RM228 with a limited number of VIP seats priced at RM428 and RM328, have been sold by the organisers in the stadium that has a capacity of 85,000.
