KUALA LUMPUR – A total of RM15.29 million was paid by 14 companies in business zakat (tithe) from the 2014 financial year to the Zakat Collection Centre of the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (PPZ-MAIWP)today.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said that as of May this year, the total amount of business zakat collected by PPZ-MAIWP was RM35.24 million, up by 52 per cent compared to the same period last year (RM23.24 million).
“Meanwhile, the number of people who paid business zakat from January to May this was 862, an increase by four per cent compared to 2014 (825 people). “MAIWP will continue to provide monthly assistance to the poor and hardcore
poor and not to one-off cases, especially those living in Kuala Lumpur and have many dependants,” he said in his speech at the 2015 Business Zakat Presentation ceremony, here, today.
Among the companies contributing the highest amount of zakat were Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) with RM8,894,130.35, Tabung Haji Travel & Services Sdn Bhd (RM2,356,512.62) and Malaysia Building Society Berhad (RM1,028,074). – BERNAMA
