A family of eight has been forced to eat boiled tapioca and banana whenever they run out of rice since the past five months due to extreme poverty.
The family lead a hard life but it has been made worse when head of the family, carpenter Mohd Zulkfli Abdullah, 45, came down with a growth in his stomach earlier this year and can only do light work.
His wife Zaiton Mamat, 41, said she used to work at a nearby carpet shop but her job has been made redundant.
The couple, who have six children, aged three to 19, now depend on their eldest child, Mohd Lukman who earns about RM20 a day as an assistant at the Wakaf Che Yeh market.
“Mohd Lukman and his younger brother Mohd Hakim had to drop out of school because our hardship. The money he earned is used to buy food for the family.
“We normally eat only rice with budu daily and if there is no rice, I boil tapioca and banana,” she said when met at her house at Kampung Puteri Saadong near Wakaf Che Yeh here.
The couple has four other children, Nor Masitah, 13, Nurain Atirah, nine, Nurarisya Amina, four, and Nuralia Kistina, three.
Zaiton said she had to sell her motorcycle last year to buy a generator to supply electricity to the house as power supply to the house has been cut as they owed nearly RM2,000 to Tenaga Nasional Berhad.
“We need assistance badly as two of our children will be starting school next year. Besides that, I am appreciative if there are employers who are willing to hire me so that I can supplement the income of the family,” she said.-NST
