GEORGE TOWN – After less than 48 hours of being a fugitive, the suspect wanted for the murder of four in Batu Maung early yesterday morning, was shot dead by police today.
The man who was identified as Chung Chun Wah, 32, was shot dead by local police together with the help of Bukit Aman near the Air Itam market where he used to sell chicken.
Penang CID Chief Datuk Razaruddin Hussain said that the suspect was spotted by the public in the Air Itam market area who had informed the police about it at around 7 pm.
“After recieving information from the public, police approached the suspect who was in a gold Wira Aeroback. He then had fired several shots towards the police and police had to return fire.
“He was killed in the shootout, but if he had not shot at the police, we would have just arrested him,” said Razaruddin at a press conference at the crime scene.
Razaruddin said the murder case of the family is considered closed.
Police believe that the gun that was used by Chun Wah was the same 9mm semi automatic gun that was used to kill all his four victims.
Yesterday, a 55-year-old woman Tan Saw Sim, her son and race jockey Chung Wah Thong, 28, and grandson Chung Ay Dey or Ah Bee, two, as well as factory operator Toh Hock Choon, 50, were killed in the incident that happened at their chicken processing factory at 2.55am.
Chun Wah who is the son of Saw Sim, brother of Wah Tong and uncle to Ah Bee was believed to be the sole suspect of the murder as CCTV recordings revealed it.
Police believe the motive behind the murder was money as Saw Sim had a commotion with Chun Wah before killing them all.
Police also believe that he was under drug influence when he shot all of them mercilessly.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) tweeted at 8.35pm congratulating the police team for taking down the alleged murder suspect after a shooting battle between him and the police.
At about 8.15pm, forensic doctor Datuk Bupinder Singh had conducted checks at the crime scene and the sister of Chun Wah had come to the scene to identify his body.
The forensic team is still investigating how many shots were fired at the scene. – BERNAMA
