PUTRAJAYA – Police today recorded a statement from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad over his remarks allegedly linking the Bugis ethnic group to pirates.

Four police officers from Bukit Aman recorded the statement at the former prime minister’s office at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Precinct 8 here.

Dr Mahathir’s lawyer, Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla, when met by reporters afterwards, said 32 questions were asked during the 45-minute session.

Dr Mahathir gave his full cooperation and answered every question except those that he was cautioned to answer in court if he was to be charged, he said.

Mohamed Haniff said he was informed that the statement was taken following three police reports lodged by certain parties and that the case was being investigated under the Sedition Act, the Penal Code and the Communications and Multimedia Act.

Dr Mahathir, in his speech at an assembly organised by the opposition parties in Petaling Jaya on Oct 14 had allegedly tried to link Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as possibly a descendant of Bugis pirates. – BERNAMA
