BUKIT MERTAJAM – Police have recorded the statement of a male doctor following an inspection at a private clinic here, which allegedly offered abortion services.
Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief ACP Rusli Mohd Noor said the doctor aged 54, who was also the clinic owner was detained at 8 pm and released on police bail a few hours later.
“A team from the Health Ministry’s Private Medical Practice Control Unit(UKAPS) was conducting a routine inspection at the clinic. There was a
Nepalese woman inside at the time.
“When asked, the woman replied that she was there for an abortion. Suspecting that the clinic was offering abortion services, the team carried out a more thorough inspection,” he said when contacted here today.
He said police then detained the woman and her male companion, also a Nepalese, in their 30s, to record their statements. They were released after a few hours.
Meanwhile, a state Health Department spokesman when contacted, confirmed the incident but declined to provide more information.
“A full report on the activities of the clinic would be sent to our headquarters in Putrajaya,” said the spokesman.
The UKAPS team also seized various instruments and machines from the clinic to facilitate investigations. – BERNAMA
