IPOH – Perak police seized 14.5kg of heroin worth RM280,000 following the arrest of a construction worker at the parking area of the southbound Taiping lay-by of the North South Expressway last Friday.
Perak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department deputy chief, Supt Abdul Latiff Mehat, said the man, in his 40s, was sitting in a Proton Saga car when he was nabbed at 12.40 pm.
“Following inspection, police found a black bag containing 10 large packets of heroin weighing a total of 4,510 grams and worth RM90,000,” he told reporters at the Perak Police headquarters here today.
He said the suspect from Perak had eight previous criminal records related to drug and crime.
The suspect had been remanded for seven days from last Friday to facilitate further investigation.
Acting on a public tip-off, the police raided a hut in a plantation area in Simpang near Taiping at 11 pm the following day and found another 20 large packets of heroin weighing 10kg and worth RM190,000.
Police also found various drug paraphernalia, including a weighing scale, buckets, stove and gas cylinder, as well as three motorcycles at the scene, he said, adding that no arrest was made.
According to Abdul Latiff, it was the biggest heroin seizure in the state so far this year. – BERNAMA
