MELAKA – The police have detained four people, including the suspected mastermind in connection with Tuesday’s kidnapping of a 12-day-old baby boy in Kota Laksamana here.
The three women and a man, aged between 21 and 25, were picked up last night.
Melaka police chief Datuk Chua Ghee Lye said two of the suspects were the infant’s relatives, adding that initial investigations revealed the abduction was fuelled by financial difficulties.
The infant was sent to the Melaka Hospital for health check-up, he told a media conference here today.
On Tuesday, the baby’s mother received a short messaging service from a man at 6.52pm, demanding a RM300,000 ransom to secure the release of the infant who had been kidnapped.
Chua said subsequently, the kidappers agreed to reduce the amount to RM200,000, following negotiations.
“About 10.30 last night, the victim’s family as instructed by the kidnappers, went to a tuition centre in Pulau Gadong to deliver the money.
“A police team raided the premises and rescued the baby. They also detained three women at the premises.
“Subsequently, the police detained a man, believed to be the uncle of the victim,” he added. – BERNAMA
