SERDANG – The police and armed forces will be mobilising their personnel at Cameron Highlands to raid illegal opening of land here at night, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
According to him, the measure was taken following his discussion with the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah, based on reports that such activities were frequently carried out by illegal immigrants at night.
“I have directed the Inspector-General of Police (Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar) and Armed Forces Chief (Gen Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin) to send their troops so that a more comprehensive patrol could be carried out to nab the culprits,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters after opening the 2014 Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Exhibition (MAHA) at the Malaysian Agro Exposition Park Serdang (Meaps), here today.
On the proliferation of illegal immigrantS at the highlands, he said stricter and more effective enforcement would be conducted with the cooperation of the Pahang state government and the federal government.
Najib said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the chairman of the Special Committee On Flash Floods in Cameron Highlands, would be visiting the highlands on Monday with Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.
“I hope from the joint visit and discussion, we will take more effective actions and overcome the weak enforcement all this while to stem the problem of illegal farming,” he said.
A flood and landslide incident at Kampung Raja in Ringlet and Lembah Bertam in Cameron Highlands on Nov 5 claimed five lives while more than 90 victims from 28 families were evacuated to a relief centre at the Ringlet community hall. – BERNAMA
