SEPANG – The ‘Pocket Rocketman’ Mohd Azizulhasni Awang received a hero’s welcome upon arrival at the KL International Airport here today.
The Emirates Flight EK408, which carries the Rio Olympic bronze medallist, was also given water salute upon landing at the airport at 3 pm.
Arriving together with Azizulhasni were fellow cyclist, Fatehah Mustapa, and their coach John Beasly, as well as national yachting athlete Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy and Nur Shazrin Mohamad Latif.
They were welcomed by National Sports Institute chief executive officer Dr Khairi Zawi and National Sports Council deputy director Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdullah, as well as family members and national back-up cyclists.
“I was surprised to see the aircraft being given the water salute and to personally receive a hero’s welcome.
“This is indeed a wonderful welcome for me. Thank you all,” he told reporters at the KLIA’s Arrival Hall, while taking his three-year-old daughter, Amna Mariyam, in his arms.
Meanwhile, Azizulhasni called on all quarters not to further sensationalise his ‘roadbike’ issue with Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman.
He said this was because he would discuss the matter personally with Ahmad Razif when he returned to Terengganu.
“I don’t want to comment on this issue anymore. I believe he is a caring menteri besar…there might be a misunderstanding or overlooking something somewhere, just give us time to discuss it,” he said.
Azizulhasni said the matter shouldn’t be sensationalised as he wanted his success of winning the bronze medal in the keirin event at the Rio Olympics, to inspire young cyclists.
“Let’s not dwell on the small issue…I just want my success story to inspire all…the story of a small man from a small country who strive for excellence and the bitter-sweet experiences that helped me win the Olympic medal this year,” he added.
The issue surfaced when Azizulhasni wrote on Facebook of his disappointment with Ahmad Razif for allegedly not supporting him and Fatehah when they asked for a sponsor for roadbikes in their preparations for the Rio Olympics. – BERNAMA
