PETALING JAYA: Pointing the finger back at Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak (pic) has blamed the former premier for creating the “mess” the country is in.

Najib said the “mess” was largely that of Dr Mahathir’s own making as a result of his attacks compounded by lies and slander spewed by the Opposition.

“It has a significant effect on public perception, as he is not just any ordinary citizen,” said Najib on the frequently asked questions (FAQs) section on his blog, NajibRazak.com.

These allegations, said Najib, have been amplified through the internet, which is something the veteran statesman did not have to face when he was the prime minister.

“Any controversy that arose over his or his government’s actions would take days if not weeks to develop.

“Tun did not have to face endless allegations that are recycled over and over and shared at lightning speed. The word ‘viral’ was almost non-existent during his administration,” he said.

Today, Najib said the online media with “hidden agendas” spin headlines that get shared and spread by the minute, which “perpetuates the perception that they must be true.

“With such an onslaught online, it’s not surprising that Tun thinks there is a bigger ‘mess’ today,” he said.

Najib said despite challenges, he has brought changes to the country as reflected in the government’s track record since he took over six years ago.

He then stressed that even his resignation would not stop Dr Mahathir from interfering in the country’s administration.

“He can say he is simply exercising his democratic rights as a citizen, but this is Tun Mahathir. People tend to believe whatever he says, even if it is not entirely accurate,” he said.

Najib said there are reasons why former heads of state across the world do not intervene in the work of current administrations, because whatever they say can easily affect the system.

“Tun did many noble and great things as PM but he is no longer running the administration. He is a veteran politician and a master of public perception.

“He understands that political statements are not entirely about the truth but about what the people will believe in the court of public opinion.

“This is why he continues to make insinuations, speaking half-truths, cracking misleading jokes and twisting statements to make his views exciting and palatable,” he said.

He then urged all Malaysians, including the Umno and BN members, not to be influenced with Dr Mahathir’s attacks.
