KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today presented the Young Women Icon Award to six recipients for their outstanding achievements in their respective fields during the Puteri UMNO Assembly here today.
They are lawn bowl athlete Emma Firyani Saroji, for sports; Nur Zalikha Mohd Sabri (entrepreneurship); Dr Aizan Sofia Amin (research); Datuk Hanimzah Jalaludin (religion) and Shariffah Mariam Syed Abdullah or Sherry Alhadad (arts).
Rompin Puteri UMNO committee member Wan Noraini Zainurian, who is a person with disabilities (OKU), received the Special Award for her achievements in badminton.
Meanwhile, Dr Aizan Sofia, who is a lecturer at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), when met, said she would enhance research intervention programmes for the OKU.
Dr Aizan, who lost her right leg at the age of 16 due to bone cancer, said she hoped to inspire others, despite her handicap.
“I want to be the pioneer in disability studies and encourage more people to carry out research in the field,” she added.
Najib also presented prizes to three Puteri UMNO divisions for their success in getting more women to join the movement.
They are the Kuala Nerus, Kuala Terengganu and Marang divisions, which had been able to increase their membership by 348, 232 and 226 people, respectively. — BERNAMA
