DUBAI – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has congratulated Tun Musa Hitam, the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) Foundation Chairman, for his leadership in taking WIEF to the next level.
“I wish to congratulate Tun Musa and the WIEF Secretariat team for their tireless efforts in making WIEF what it is today, a forum with immense global recognition,” he said in the introduction to his special address at the opening of the 10th edition of WIEF here.
Themed “Innovative Partnerships for Economic Growth”, the forum being held at Madinat Jumeirah here until Oct 30 has attracted some 2,700 attendees, up from a humble 400 attendees when it was first held in Kuala Lumpur 10 years ago.
Najib, who is the Patron of WIEF Foundation, also took the opportunity to acknowledge Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who mooted the idea of having WIEF.
“He provided much leader support and impetus opportunities in the early years of inception of WIEF. Thank you Tun for your support past and present,” he said.
Abdullah is one of the former leaders who are invited to this year’s Forum.
Proving its good acceptance, the WIEF was held outside of the Muslim world for the first time last year in London which attracted 18 heads of state and government, 46 ministers, seven central bank governors and 2,800 delegates from 128 countries.
Musa in his welcome remarks expressed confidence that attendance at this year’s Forum would surpass London’s.
“The latest count is 2,783, we are confident of overtaking London,” he said, eliciting enthusiastic applause from the audience. – BERNAMA
