NAYPYIDAW – The 25th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit and its related summits were opened this morning with calls for a political cohesive, economically integrated and socially responsible Asean community.
Myanmar President Thein Sein, who officially opened the summit said the regional bloc was at an important crossroad to carry out various efforts to realise the Asean community that will become a reality at the end of 2015.
Myanmar is the current chairman for the 10-member state regional bloc.
“Our meetings take place at an important juncture for Asean as the Asean Community will emerge at the end of next year.
“As the Asean Community will be realised in line with the Roadmap, it is incumbent upon us to collectively think about our main task for our future to lead our community in a sustainable way,” he said in a speech.
Malaysia will take over the chairmanship of Asean next year.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was present. – NST
