PUTRAJAYA- Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has agreed to form a special investigation team to thoroughly probe into the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case.
Aside from investigating the case, the team is also tasked to track down and seize assets as well as prosecute people who had committed any criminal activities relating to the management of 1MDB.
The special investigation team will be jointly headed by former Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed; MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull and former Special Branch deputy director Datuk Abdul Hamid Bador.
“The team members will comprise the MACC, the Attorney General’s Chambers, the police, Bank Negara Malaysia and several lawyers.
“The special team is responsible in the overall aspect of coordinated investigation, tracking down the money and acquisition of assets that resulted from discrepancies and embezzlement of 1MDB fund that is kept and invested locally and abroad.
“This team is also responsible to get the cooperation from all foreign enforcement agencies (including) the United States, Switzerland, Singapore, Canada and other countries,” said the Prime Minister’s office in a statement.
It added that the government hoped with the setting up of the special investigation team involving various enforcement agencies, it can regain the country’s dignity which had been tarnished.
The government expressed hope for the team to be able to recover the people’s money and assets following the kleptoracy scandal due to alleged misappropriation and embezzlement of 1MDB fund.- New Straits Times
