KUALA LUMPUR – National Under 23 (U-23) football squad head coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee believes his players are ready to put up a stiff competition against three Arabian countries in the 2018 AFC U-23 Football Championship Group C matches in China.
The Melaka-born coach said that although it would be a tough task against Iraq, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, he is confident that his charges are up to the task based on their thorough preparation.
“Facing this three strong sides would give invaluable experience to the players. We know that we have to work hard to get a positive result against them and I believe the players would give their best in all matches,” Kim Swee told a press conference after attending the team managers meeting, today.
The audio of the press conference was made available to Bernama.
In the opening match against Iraq at the Changshu Stadium tomorrow, Kim Swee said he reminded his charges not to give too much respect against the opponents who have a better track record in the tournament.
“We can’t deny that Iraq are a good team, both at the junior and senior level in AFC competitions and I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s match against them.
“The players are also aware how good Iraq are in the tournament based on their previous record but nevertheless, if we use the right tactical approach, I believe that we can get a positive result against them,” he asserted.
After the match against Iraq, Malaysia will take on Jordan on Jan 13 at the same venue before wrapping up their preliminary fixtures against Saudi Arabia at Kunshan Stadium, three days later. – BERNAMA
