PERMATANG PAUH – PKR President Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail beat Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Suhaimi Sabudin by a 8,841-vote majority in the Permatang Pauh by-election today.
Dr Wan Azizah polled 30,316 votes against Suhaimi’s 21,475 while Independent candidate Salleh Isahak received 367 votes and Azman Shah Othman from Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) managed only 101 votes.
The voter turnout for the Permatang Pauh Parliamentary seat was recorded as 74 percent compared with 88.3 percent during the 13th General Election while spoilt votes stood at 843.
The announcement was made by Election Commission (EC) spokesman for the Permatang Pauh by-election, Jusni Ismail at Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara, here tonight.
In the 13th General Election, Dr Wan Azizah’s husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim received 37,090 votes against BN’s Dr Mazlan Ismail (25,369) to win the seat.
However, a by-election was necessitated after incumbent Anwar Ibrahim was disqualified to hold the post due to his sodomy conviction and failure to obtain a royal pardon.
He is now serving a five-year jail sentence. – BERNAMA
