SHAH ALAM: PartiKeadilan Rakyat (PKR) is playing the role of Umno in the opposition alliance as the multi-racial Malay-based party promotes moderation to glue together DAP, PAS and the newly formed Parti Amanah Nasional (Amanah) in the volatile Pakatan Harapan and the defunct Pakatan Rakyat.
Top on PKR’s leaders list is to strengthen the state government of Selangor where DAP does not see eye-to-eye with PAS and Amanah, comprising rejected PAS leaders who are MPs and assemblymen, going after the throat of PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
Under such situation, PKR has no choice but to ‘walk the thin line’ carefully by promoting moderation so as to accommodate the liberal philosophy of DAP, the Islamic liberalism of Amanah and the fundamentalist PAS.
While party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail did not mention the subject matter in her policy speech today when launching the party 11th national congress, the party deputy president who is also Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali did say it in his speech when opening the joint congress of the party youth and wanita wings on Friday.
Azmin said PKR would find solutions to glue all the opposition parties and NGOs so that all would act as one force against the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) in the next general election.
And yesterday at the sideline of the congress, Azmin said the Selangor state government would continue leading and fulfilling the mandate of the people in the 2013 general election to Pakatan Rakyat and not Pakatan Harapan.
“It is incumbent on me to continue serving as Pakatan Rakyat leader as expected bynthe voters which DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng had also agreed afer I explained yo him.
“As such, we must be accommodating to remain united and steadfast and repeat our old mistakes,” he added.
But in the delicate situation where Amanah and Selangor DAP leaders had made a stand to cut ties and demanded Azmin and PKR to do the same wih PAS, the PKR leadership has no choice but to push for moderation so that the opposition parties and anti-establishment NGOs can stay united.
And the same goes with the opposition pact in Sabah and Sarawak where the focus is now is for Sarawak state election which is to be held latest by May next year.
While the DAP remain strong with the Chinese voters’ loyalty which the party is confident that there is no decline or erosion, PKR anf PAS are grappling with their support that is unpredictable.
The fear that the opposition parties may see themselves contesting each other is not qn impossible thing as DAP and PKR had totally cut ties with PAS, PKR is seeking amicable solution to iron out matters.
Given such a background, it is just timely that PKR play the role of moderator effectively or see the opoposition dream fly out of its war room’s window.-MYNEWSHUB.CC/Text: Hassan Idris
