IPOH – Perak is targeting at least 70 gold medals to be overall champions of the 19th edition of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) which will be held in the state in September.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the target could be realised if all the athletes representing Perak at the championship struggled hard to bring glory to the state.
He said the advantages of being the host should be used to win the championship for the first time in order to overcome the previous best record of winning third place at Sukma 2002 in Sabah with 49 gold medals.
“I have confidence in our athletes because some of them have contributed (medals) not only at the state level, but also in international competitions including the Olympics.
“With the potential, guidance and strategies set up, I am confident that Perak will emerge champions or at least give a strong competition,” he told reporters after the launch of the 19th Sukma 2018 theme song, ‘Wow! We Are Awesome’, mascot and logo here last night.
The 19th Sukma is scheduled to take place from Sept 12 to 22, and 26 sports comprising 369 events would be contested in the second Sukma Games held in Perak after the first time in 1994. – BERNAMA
