IPOH – The Perak Football Association (PAFA) has named Vjeran Simunic as coach of the state’s football team for the Super League next season.
Its president, Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharuddin announced the Croatian’s appointment as new coach for the ‘Bos Gaurus’ team in a press conference at PAFA’s office in Ipoh, Tuesday.
Simunic, 61, who last coached Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota Football Club (DPMM FC) in Brunei has over 30 years experience as coach including a stint with Saigon Football Club (Vietnam).
Zainol Fadzi said the choice of Simunic was made after PAFA made a comparison and evaluation of the popular Croatian coach.
“PAFA believes that Simunic can use his vast experience as coach to bring changes to the team,” he said.
Simunic’s appointment was early preparation for Perak who failed to progress in the Malaysia Cup competition after going out at the second group stage.
“Reshuffling of the Perak squad is also an early initiative for the Super League challenge next season,” said Zainol Fadzi.
PAFA has terminated the contract of 10 players, including three foreign players, Md Nor Haziq, Md Hidayat and Milan Purovic.
Eight players from the Presidents Cup squad absorbed into the Super League squad include Hafiz Ramadan, Amirul Azhan and Mohd Norhakim Isa.
PAFA retained Datuk Azhar Ahmad as Perak football team manager for next season.
According to Zainol Fadzi, Perak will only register 22 players (18 local and four foreign players) of the 26 players allowed for registration.
“If we need to register other players, it will be made during the second window,” he added.
Meanwhile, Simunic said that the trust given by PAFA has spurred him to strive and turn Perak into a better team.
“We will build the team step by step and will turn Perak into a better team. We target to make Perak the top three teams in the Super League next season,” he added. – Bernama
