GEORGE TOWN: Penang Umno has called on Lim Guan Eng to step down as Chief Minister pending his corruption trial.

“He must also relinquish all other positions he holds in the state by virtue of his office.

“This is vital to preserving the integrity of the Chief Minister post,” said Penang Umno chief Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman (pic) in a statement on Thursday.

He said this was not the first time that a state leader had been charged with corruption.

“This is not a political prosecution. We were told more than 90 people were called in during the investigation, which had been done meticulously.

Zainal added that until Lim, no Penang chief minister had ever been charged with corruption.

He said the country’s laws were fair, just and did not favour rank, race, religion or political beliefs.

Lim, he said, would have the right to defend himself in court.
