in Latest

GEORGE TOWN – Police have re-classified a road accident case along Penang Road early yesterday morning as murder.

Timur Laut District Police Chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said after studying the closed circuit television recordings in the area, police found that a car had intentionally knocked into motorcyclist S.Muniandi, 42, from Batu Ferringhi, causing his death.

“The CCTV recording shows that after the collision, two suspects got out of the Persona car which knocked the victim and hit him several times, and later they abandoned the car after they rammed through a police roadblock,” he told reporters in a press conference here today.

He added that the suspects managed to flee on a motorcycle.

Mior Faridalatrash said the car had been taken to the Timur Laut District Police Station for investigations.

He refuted reports by certain parties that the motorcyclist had snatched a bag belonging to the car owner based on the recorded statement of a woman who claimed to have been at the scene.

“The woman who made the statement has been detained for making a false statement, and police believe she tried to deceive the authorities. Initial investigations also found she had a previous record pertaining to a house-breaking case in 2005, and is wanted by the police,” he said.

Mior Faridalatrash added that according to the victim’s mother, he left the house at 1am to meet some friends for a meal, and she gave him RM20.

“Police also detained the car owner’s father, aged 60, to help in the investigations.

“Police have identified two men suspected to be directly involved in the case and are tracking them down. The motive of the incident is still being investigated,” he said.

He added that so far, three police reports have been made and police are investigating the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code. – BERNAMA
