PAS Likens Pakatan Harapan To ‘Express Bus’

in Latest/Politics

KUALA LUMPUR – PAS regards Pakatan Harapan as an “express bus” party which may not achieve its objective of looking after the lot of the people.

PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang stressed that the party would not compromise with Pakatan Harapan and in fact, would continue to be an opposition party that held strong to the principle of being an Islamic-based party.

“PAS will not join any framework that is not Islamic-based because we will not ride a ‘bus express’ which will not reach its destination, then we will have to walk.

“We want an ethical and civilised democratic process, and that does not overlook the concept of constitutional monarchy, and at the same time protect race relations in a plural society,” he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby, here, today.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail had in September, announced that Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) agreed to form a new opposition pact known as Pakatan Harapan.

Abdul Hadi, who is also Marang MP, believed that PAS which had been on its own would continue to fight as a party that gave hope to the people.

“We don’t have (hopes) with Harapan, we will reach the destination that we want. PAS is not dependent on any party, the one that is dependent (on others) is another party,” he said.

However, he said, the 64-year-old Islamist party was not arrogant over the strength it possessed and was instead prepared to cooperate with all quarters including Barisan Nasional, DAP and PKR in all matters in the interest of the people.

“This is because PAS is more towards maintaining its relations with the people and not just with parliamentarians. We are ready to debate in Parliament or meet with the government to offer alternatives that prioritise the rights of the people,” he added. – BERNAMA
