BATU PAHAT – PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said today the party has no desire to grab the post of Selangor menteri besar, contrary to what people outside the party may think.
Speaking during the winding-up of debate at and adjournment of the party’s 60th general assembly in Parit Raja here, he said that in the matter of the Selangor menteri besar issue, Islamic law had to be adhered to and not just the law of reason.
“PAS is not comfortable with the Kajang Move. I wish to stress that PAS has no intention to grab the post of (Selangor) menteri besar. However, it must be remembered that Islamic law must be adhered to, not just the law of reason,” he said to shouts of ‘Allahuakbar’ (God is great) from the delegates.
The Kajang Move was initiated by PKR to have Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim replaced as the menteri besar of Selangor by the newly-elected Kajang assemblyman.
PKR advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was to have been the PKR candidate for the Kajang state by-election but his wife, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, contested after Anwar’s conviction prevented him from being fielded.
Abdul Hadi said PAS had no desire to grab the post despite having 15 seats in the 56-seat Selangor state legislative assembly compared to 14 held by PKR. The DAP has 15 seats and Barisan Nasional, 12.
The PAS president said the Selangor Constitution stipulated that the post of menteri besar should be filled by a Malay and a Muslim.
He also touched on ‘Tahaaluf Siyasi’ (political cooperation) with the party’s partners in the Pakatan Rakyat – PKR and DAP – and hit out at them for having been unethical in ‘stealing’ two PAS elected representatives to support them in the issue of the Selangor menteri besar.
He claimed that certain quarters, whom he did not name, played the role of ‘pimp’ and ‘broker’ to enable the two PAS elected representatives to sign a statutory declaration to support the candidacy of Wan Azizah for menteri besar.
The two PAS representatives who signed the declaration, along with the representatives from the DAP and PKR, were Saari Sungib (Hulu Kelang) and Hasnul Baharuddin (Morib).
The new menteri besar of Selangor is scheduled to take his oath of office at the Istana Alam Shah in Klang on Tuesday.
Abdul Hadi said that despite the political cooperation, the Pakatan Rakyat partners – PAS, DAP and PKR – maintained their different policies because such cooperation did not mean that that they became one political party with the same policies.
“Tahaaluf Siyasi is cooperation where we (PAS, PKR and DAP) seek points of similarities,” he said. – BERNAMA
