KOTA BARU- Pas believes that Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is the best candidate to replace Datuk Seri Najib Razak as Umno president.
Pas deputy president, Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, said this was based on Zahid’s experience and background as well as his views on Islam.
Tuan Ibrahim said although the issue is an internal Umno matter, Pas believes that Umno is still strong as it still has around three million members.
“Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah is also capable because he is influential and has been in the party since the beginning. However, he has many cases that may worry party members.
“Umno Youth Chief Khairy Jamaluddin is also influential amongst the youth, but I feel that Khairy still has long way to go as he still young.
“Looking at the list of candidates, I feel Zahid is the most suitable and has a stronger chance of winning the post. Overall, I think the competition this time is fierce,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters at Kelantan Pas’ Aidilfitri open house, held at Stadium Sultan Muhammad V. Also present were Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob and Kelantan Pas senior leaders.
The tussle for the Umno presidency is the most open in Umno’s 70-year history, with seven individuals contesting for the position.
The seven are Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi; Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh; blogger Rahmat Azim Abdul Aziz; Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin; Umno Bandar Tun Razak committee member Mohd Iqbal Maricair; Umno Iskandar Puteri member Mohd Yusof Musa @ Jamaludin; and Umno Bangi member Rosile Saat.- New Strait Times
