NILAI – National Paralympic gold medallist Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli tied the knot with his long time beau Zafirah Md Nasir at her home in Jalan Casuarina here, tonight.
Muhammad Ziyad, 26, donning a cream baju melayu, arrived at the bride’s home at about 8.40pm and performed the nikah ceremony witnessed by about 200 guests.
Zafirah, 26, also dressed in a cream outfit, was all smiles after the ceremony was concluded by Ziyad and her father Md Nasir Abd Wahab.
The two had first met and fell for each other in 2009, while they were studying in a private college, however, just four months later, Ziyad left the college upon receiving an offer from the National Sports Council to become a full-time athlete.
Muhammad Ziyad had won the F20 (intellectual disability) shot put gold medal at the Rio Paralympic Games in Brazil, setting a new world record with a throw of 16.84m.
When met by reporters at the ceremony, Muhammad Ziyad said he felt more nervous on his wedding night than when during a competition.
“This is a new chapter in my life, when Zafirah’s father handed over his daughter to me and now I hold a very big responsibility as a husband,” he said.
Meanwhile, Zafirah said she was attracted to Muhammad Ziyad’s cheerful personality, and that he was a loving and responsible person.
Md Nasir, 60, proud of his first son-in-law, said the athlete was very respectful of the elderly and prayed for the couple to lead a happy and prosperous life. – BERNAMA
