KUANTAN – Defending champion Pakistan will go to the final in the 2016 Asian
Champions Trophy Tournament after beating Malaysia 3-2 through a penalty shootout
at the Kuantan Hockey Stadium here last night.
Both teams were tied 1-1 in regulation time, forcing the match to be decided
by a penalty shootout.
The first half belonged to Malaysia when Shahril Saabah scored a goal in the
18th minute via a penalty corner hit.
After the break, Pakistan were rewarded when Abdul Khan scored a field goal
in the 34th minute.
In the penalty shootout, three goals for Pakistan were scored by Abdul Khan,
Muhammad Ifran Jnr and Muhammad Arslan Qadir, while Malaysian’s goals were from
Firhan Ashari and Faizal Saari.
As such, Pakistan will face arch-rival India in the final today while
Malaysia will play against South Korea to determine the third and fouth
