KUANTAN – Pahang were knocked out of the AFC Cup competition in the quarterfinal stage despite beating Istiklol from Tajikistan 3-1 in their second leg quarterfinal at the Darul Makmur Stadium, here Wednesday night.
Pahang who had lost the first leg 0-4 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on Aug 26, lost 3-5 on aggregate.
Hafiz Kamal gave Pahang the lead in the 30th minute to revive their hope and added the second in the 57th minute but Istiklol managed to reduce the deficit in the 60th minute through Makhmudov Khurshed to maintain a three goal advantage.
Striker D. Saarvindran made it 3-1 to Pahang in the 90th minute but the win fell short of the goals needed to overturn the four goal deficit from the first leg.
Yesterday, Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) became the first Malaysian club side to advance to the semifinals of the AFC Cup competition since 2004.
JDT beat South China FC from Hong Kong to advance.
