PADANG BESAR – Padang Besar, a popular destination for tourists in Perlis, will be given a facelift with the implementation of various infrastructure projects, including upgrading of a market there.
Titi Tinggi Assemblyman Khaw Hock Kong said the dry market, located besides the Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) Business Arcade, would be upgraded into a four-storey building.
“Traders will be separated based on the type of their business wares to ensure cleanliness of the market. There will also be more parking spaces,” he told Bernama here today.
Khaw said the project was now in the final stage of planning and its implementation would be in line with the Chuping Valley Industrial Area (CVIA) carried out under the 11th Malaysia Plan.
He said the number of tourist arrivals in Padang Besar increased drastically since Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) launched its electric train service last year.
“The Butterworth-Padang Besar commuter service of 14 trips daily contributes to the increase in tourist arrivals, especially during the holidays and on weekends,” he added.
Khaw said a building belonging to the Perlis Economic Development Corporation (PKENPs) located near the Padang Besar Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Complex was being renovated and scheduled to be completed in June.
The building can accommodate 138 traders, he added.
He said the projects were carried out as part of the effort to beautify Padang Besar, as well as provide more parking spaces in the area. – BERNAMA
