Optimise UMNO General Assembly As People’s Political Platform

ALOR SETAR – The UMNO 2016 General Assembly to be held at month’s end should be optimised as a platform for the party to show its capacity as a political medium representing the voice of the people, especially the Malays in the country.

National Council of Professors’ Political, Security and International Affairs Cluster head, Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said UMNO needed to demonstrate its relevancy despite facing various issues that could tarnish the credibility and image of the party.

He said the party should show that it was still capable of preparing for the country’s future agenda as being alert and ready to fulfil the people’s aspirations.

“At the general assembly UMNO must step up and confidently declare that no other party can assure stability, peace and unity of the people as undertaken by UMNO since independence,” he told Bernama.

Thus, Mohamed added, the general assembly should boost the enthusiasm and confidence of its members to be in full gear while strengthening their unity and spirit, especially in facing any possibility.

“UMNO may face stronger opposition when compared with previous general elections due to new issues fsced by UMNO and the government, he said.

Thus, he urged the party representatives to be bolder in expressing key issues such as the future of the nation through education, the government’s capability to drive the economy and uphold the people’s well-being as well as the cost of living.

Touching on the situation in Kedah, Mohamed said attention should also be given to Parti Peribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) as two former key Kedahan UMNO leaders were heading the UMNO offshoot party.

Meanwhile, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) senior lecturer at the School of International Studies, Associate Prof Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani said the general assembly should be used as a platform to reinforce the party’s solidarity in efforts to avoid any elements of ‘internal sabotage’.

He said this should be the time for the delegates to voice out their grievances towards the leadership and resolve the issues professionally. – BERNAMA
