KUALA NERANG – The Kedah Immigration Department detained 27 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar under ‘Ops Mega’ that was carried out at two separate locations here yesterday.
Its director, Zuhair Jamaludin said in the operation that lasted from 3.15pm to 5.30pm, 22 Bangladeshi and five Myanmar men, aged between 21 and 53, were detained.
“In the joint operation involving 15 immigration officers and 40 members of the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA), 36 illegals of various nationalities were screened at housing construction sites and wood processing factories in Kuala Nerang.
“The illegals who were working attempted to escape to the forest but were caught by enforcers for not possessing valid travel documents,” he said in a statement today.
Zuhair said, all the illegals were detained at the immigration lockup at the Home Ministry’s building in Alor Setar for further investigation action before being handed over to the Belantik Immigration Depot in Sik. – BERNAMA
