KENINGAU – Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan said the opposition was now using character assassination to topple the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He said this could be seen through the slander and baseless accusations hurled against Najib, who is also Umno president, to destroy his reputation and image so as to create a bad public perception against his leadership.
The character assassination was an attempted trap by the opposition to ensure that Najib would no longer be the party’s main pillar in the 14th General Election, he told reporters after a dialogue on current issues with the Keningau and Pensiangan Umno divisions, here, Saturday.
Ahmad said the opposition was also seen as trying to “kill” 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) by manipulating facts on the company to create doubts and confusion among the public.
Besides that, he said, there were attempts to weaken Umno and Barisan Nasional’s internally as their strength was seen as the source of the ruling government’s victory in the 13th General Election.
In light of this, Ahmad reminded all Umno leaders and members throughout the country not be get trapped by the opposition’s dirty tactics as this could weaken the party.
“If Umno’s strength is broken, we will be weak in facing the next general election,” he said.
On the organising of the Bersih 4 rally which gained worldwide support, Ahmad said Umno could also do the same by expressing support for the government as there were Umno Clubs in 70 locations across the world.
Earlier, during the dialogue, Ahmad explained the current issues that have become controversial, including the RM2.6 billion fund, 1MDB, and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) which he said, had been used by the opposition to topple the government.
