KUALA KANGSAR: With polling just a day away, the Opposition campaign is heating up with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad joining in.
In Manong and Jerlun, the former prime minister told the crowds to ensure that Barisan Nasional candidate Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid loses her deposit.
Accompanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, he spoke to hundreds of people in the two towns.
Also at the rallies were former Umno leaders Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan, Datuk Hamidah Osman and Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim.
“If you all come out and vote for Dr Ahmad Termizi, we should make sure that Mastura loses her deposit,†said Dr Mahathir.
Earlier, PAS candidate Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad vowed her unequivocal support for her party’s Private Member’s Bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 if she was chosen as the next MP.
She said it was her responsibility as a Muslim woman and her duty to “83% of the Malay voters in Kuala Kangsar who wanted further empowerment to the Syariah Courtsâ€.
“As a muslimah, it is compulsory for me to support any effort to empower the Syariah Courts in line with the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah,†she told reporters here yesterday.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Awang Hadi had tabled the Bill at the last Parliament meeting.
Dr Najihatussalehah said she was confident that her declaration would not affect her chances among the non-Muslim voters as the party’s machinery had been working tirelessly to explain the Bill.
