in Sports

KUCHING – A men’s doubles pair and a mixed doubles pair were the only Malaysian representatives left standing in the Malaysian Grand Prix Gold 2015 at the Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya, here.

Chan Peng Soon/Lai Pei Jing pulled off a pleasant surprise by beating 8th seeded Hong Kong pair Alan Yun Lung Chan/Tse Ying Suet 21-10, 21-17 in the quarterfinals to book their berth in the semis today.

They will however, have an uphill task to climb in the semis as they will be meeting top seeds Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Christina Pedersen of Denmark.

In the men’s doubles competition, Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong overcame Lim Kim Wah/Ow Yao Han 21-18, 21-13 in an All-Malaysia affair to book their berth in the semifinals.

V Shem-Wee Kiong will also face a tough assignment today against Taiwan’s Chen Hung Ling/Wang Chi-Lin.

There was however, no cheers for their female counterparts when Amelia Alicia Anscelly/Soong Fie were ousted by top seeded Christina Federsen/Kamillia Rytter Juhl from Denmark 14-21, 4-21 in their quarterfinal encounter.

Another men’s doubles pair Chooi Kah Ming/Teo Kok Sian also suffered a similar fate against Taiwan pair Chen Hung Ling/Chi Lin Wang, losing 21-19, 11-21, 23-25.

The biggest disappointment of the day must be Liew Daren’s exit from the competition after losing to India’s unheralded Ajay Jayaram 21-16, 21-23, 8-21 while Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif was another casualty in the quarterfinal stage after losing 21-16, 20-22, 11-21 to South Korean veteran Lee Hyun Il.

Another singles player Soo Teck Zhi was the last casualty of the day when he lost to another South Korean player, Jeon Hyeok Jin, 21-16, 14-21, 10-21. – Bernama
