SEREMBAN – A total of 343,871 disabled individuals in the country are registered in the disabled data system up to June 22, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.
She said this figures accounted for 1.1 per cent of the 30 million population of Malaysia.
“In the case of the World Health Organisation (WHO), every country is required to register at least 10 to 15 per cent of its disabled.
“So why is our registration of disabled persons less, probably the health level of Malaysians is good, or a lack of awareness that caused parents of the disabled not sending their children for registration,” she told reporters after the “Semarak Sinar Ramadan 2015” event here today.
She hoped shame or embarrassment would not be a deterrent for parents not to register their disabled children.
Hence, she urged her ministry and agencies to intensify efforts such as campaigns to create an awareness on the need to register these children, who would enjoy numerous facilities provided by the government. – BERNAMA
