KUALA LUMPUR – The frame of a Royal Malaysian Air Force’s (RMAF) Nuri M23-15 helicopter that was found at a scrap metal yard in Sungai Petani, Kedah was a disposed aircraft said the Defence Ministry.
Pictures of the frame had gone viral on social media.
Its Strategic Communications Unit in a statement today said the empty frame was sent to the workshop for dismantling works and was carried out in accordance with the inspection of disposal movable assets.
“The dismantling works of the helicopter frame could only be conducted yesterday and is expected to be completed by Friday…The mechanical components had been removed and handed over to the RMAF for repair.
“For safety reasons the frame was moved from the Butterworth Air Base last Friday and was taken to the workshop owned by Hamid Yakoob,” it said.
The statement also said the disposed helicopter was involved in an accident in Pulau Perak on December 2013 while the main factor for the disposal was due to severe damage to its fuselage and had been unserviceable ever since. – BERNAMA
