KUALA LUMPUR – National shooter Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi was named Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) Sportswoman for 2014 at the MAF Sports Awards held at Wisma Perwira, Ministry of Defence, last night.
The award was the fifth for the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) officer, after having won it in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
National bodybuilder Buda a/k Anchah was named the MAF Sportsman for 2014, his third since winning the title in 2011 and 2013.
Both athletes received RM5,000 cash, a challenge trophy and a special MAF blazer from Chief of Army Gen Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor who represented Chief of Defence Forces Gen Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin.
At the ceremony, boxer Lt Col Md Salleh Napie was presented the MAF Sports Personality 2014 award while hockey player Warrant Officer 1 Kamarudin Misman received the MAF Sports Coach Personality 2014 award.
They received RM1,000 cash, a challenge trophy and a trophy from MAF Sports Council president Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar, who is the Chief of Navy.
Nur Suryani told reporters she was honoured to have been chosen for the fifth time and hoped to give her best performance at the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore in June.
“I will try to make the RMN proud and this victory is also for my comrades,” said the Perak-born athlete.
Buda, 43, hopes to gain more success in future body-building competitions at the local and international levels.
“This year is the final year for me with Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) as I will be retiring next year, but I will continue to be active in body-building,” said the Sarawakian athlete who had served with the RMAF for 21 years.
At the ceremony, Perwira Niaga Malaysia (Pernama) chairman Gen (Rtd) Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Zainal handed over a cheque for RM50,000 as a donation to the MAF Sports Council. – BERNAMA
