PETALING JAYA – The youth who was convicted for being in possession of images and videos on child pornography, Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin is “sick” and should go through rehabilitation upon his return to the country.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said Nur Fitri Azmeer had committed a crime that was so offensive and serious.

“We really regret what the Malaysian student did as it has definitely tarnished the country’s good name.

“On that aspect, he is sick. He needs help and has to go through rehabilitation, counselling, psychiatric observation and treatment,” she said, adding that Nur Fitri Azmeer should also not be allowed to be free in society.

Met by reporters after launching the Mcdonald’s Happy Meal Book Programme at Mcdonald’s Kota Damansara here, today, Rohani said the ministry was willing to help rehabilitate him.

“We have trained counsellors. It is not only for Nur Fitri (Azmeer) but the family who are also traumatised, so please come forward and get some counselling,” she said.

The 23-year-old Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA)-sponsored student at the prestigious Imperial College London, was sentenced to five years’ jail by the Southwark Crown, London after he pleaded guilty to 17 offences, including possession of indecent images and videos of children, with intent to distribute the material.

Nur Fitri Azmeer will be deported to Malaysia after serving the sentence.

To a question on the use of child car seats to prevent death among babies or toddlers during an accident, Rohani said the ministry encouraged parents to have at least one child car seat in their vehicle.

“We should learn lessons from what happened recently (the accidents on the Duta-Ulu Klang Expressway and North-South Expressway near Kulaijaya where in both cases a baby was flung out of the vehicle on impact).

“We invest only once on a child car seat which can be used for our subsequent children,” she said.

Rohani said even though there was still no law or regulation on the use of child car seat yet, parents must in the first place take responsibility to ensure the safety of their child.

Touching on the Happy Meal Book Programme, she said it was a good effort to encourage family togetherness and to celebrate the joy of reading in Malaysia.

Rohani said the programme was in line with the ministry’s objective to shape a society of strong family units, vital fundamentally for a successful nation and civilised society. – BERNAMA
