PUTRAJAYA – The claim that the poverty of the Malay community in Penang is a legacy of the Barisan Nasional (BN) leadership is a false accusation which is racist, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
He said he was also disappointed that all the failures in Penang was connected to the previous BN government, but the successes that the BN made were never mentioned.
“Why say that the problems of the Malays in Penang were inherited from the BN government? Why not say that the success of the Chinese in Penang is a BN success. This is an unfair statement.
“It is a statement that reflects narrow thinking and he is biased and racist,” he said when commenting on media reports on a statement by Bukit Bendara Member of Parliament Zairil Khir Johari who is alleged to have said the poverty of the Malays in Penang could be attributed to the BN.
Ahmad Shabery said Zairil’s statement appeared to be guised as meritocracy but was racist in nature.
“Being racist without racism is something which must be looked at as it can happen anywhere. He does not say he is racist but despite that, his words smack of racism,” he said.
