KUALA LUMPUR – Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria respects the decision of Datuk Lee Chong Wei to take a break after the Super Series Finals in Dubai.
“Chong Wei told me that he need a long break before competing in the Thomas Cup, the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.
“I respect his decision to spend time with the family after the Super Series finals in Dubai,” he told reporters after launching the Air Asia-BAM Youth Badminton League, Selangor, here today.
Chong Wei, who ended an eight month title drought by winning the Hong Kong Open last week, decided to take a long break before focusing on the All England Badminton Championship in March, 2018.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Norza said the BAM will field the best squad for the Thomas Cup qualifying round which begins in February in Alor Setar.
“I expect Chong Wei to lead the team for the Thomas Cup qualifying round and the finals. The full list of players will be known in January,” he added.
The 2018 Thomas Cup finals are scheduled to be held in Bangkok from May 20-27. – BERNAMA
