Your wedding day should be one of the days where you are expected (entitled, even) to be selfish and needy.
But not for this newly-married couple.
Instead of a lavish banquet, they decided to donate all the food planned for themselves and the guests at their wedding to 4,000 Syrian refugees living in poverty nearby.
Fethullah Üzümcüoğlu and Esra Polat were married in Kilis province on the border of Turkey and Syria, an area which is home to thousands of refugees who have fled war in their native country.
Turkish weddings traditionally last Tuesday to Thursday, and finish with a banquet for family and friends on the final night.
Last Thursday, the newlyweds donated all the savings the family had put together for the banquet to feeding the 4,000 refugees living in and around Kilis.
Fethullah father Ali came up with the idea. He told i100.co.uk that to eat such a huge meal with family friends was ‘unncessary’.
‘There are so many people in need living next door,’ he said.
Ali said in excitement, he immediately shared his idea to his son and he was proud that Fethullah agreed.
“I’m very happy that he accepted it and they started their new happy journey with such a selfless action.”
