PETALING JAYA – Harimau Malaya head coach Dollah Salleh has no qualms about calling up Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) striker Mohd Safee Mohd Sali for training for the World Cup 2018 qualifying round.
He said Mohd Safee had shown during training that he was determined to don the national jersey for the match against Timor Leste on June 11 and Palestine on June 16 at Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
“I believe Safee will display his full potential as even when tired out during training, he had shown high commitment.
“If we look at our four strikers, Mohd Amri Yahyah, Mohd Safee, Mohd Afiq Azmi and Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, they have shown what I want to see,” he told reporters at the training ground at Wisma Persatuan Bola Sepak Malaysia, today.
Mohd Safee performed competently at the warm-up match against Kuantan FA yesterday in which Harimau Malaya scored 4-0 through Mohd Afiq in the first minute, Norshahrul Idlan (’31) and two goals by Mohd Safee (’76 and ’81).
Dollah, 51, said selecting the 23 players for the World Cup 2018 challenge which will also be the qualifying round for the Asia Cup 2019 would be quite tough.
He said he would take until Friday to decide on the list of players for the national squad, that is, a day before the international friendly match against Hong Kong.
“I do have many options for the right back and left back defence, where I see more than seven players but we only want three or four; for the left, maybe I have to reject two or three.
“I have to really observe them; they can play well against local players but at the international level, I am rather worried.
“In midfield there are not many choices, only Mohd Muslim Ahmad, Mohd Fadhli Shas, Mohd Afif Amiruddin and Ronny Harun. So I feel I don’t have any problem in that area,” he said.
For the World Cup 2018 qualifying round in Russia, Malaysia has been drawn in Group A with United Arab Emirates, Palestine, Saudi Arabia and Timor-Leste. – BERNAMA
