KUALA LUMPUR – No Malaysians were identified as passengers or crew on board EgyptAir Flight MS181 which was hijacked earlier Tuesday.
A Malaysian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said this was verified through the flight manifest.
“According to the flight manifest, no Malaysians have been identified at the moment,” she said when contacted.
The Airbus MS181 was on its way from Alexandria to Cairo when it hijacked.
The aircraft with 81 passengers was forced to divert to Larnaca Airport on the south coast of Cyprus.
According to an official statement from EgyptAir, one of the passengers, wearing a suicide belt had threatened the commanding officer known only as ‘Pilot Omar’ and asked to divert the aircraft to Cyprus.
Meanwhile in the latest tweet by the airline, the negotiations with the hijacker had resulted in the release of all passengers except cabin crew and four foreigners.
