The electricity tariff will not be increased this year despite changes in global fuel price.
Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili said there is a moratorium by the cabinet that the tariff will not be increased this year.
“It will not be increased even in the remaining months of the year,†he said when met at Parliament today.
Maximus said should the price of fuel increase, the cost will be absorbed by the government
“Since the government say no increase, we will look into giving more subsidy,†he said.
Maximus said fuel price translate to only one per cent of electricity cost, as crude oil and diesel are not used.
“If the fuel price is of downward trend, we will check on if there is any amount to be passed back to consumers,†he said.-NST
