KUALA LUMPUR: City police will not allow the Bersih 4.0 rally to go on now that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is not allowing the gathering to be held at Dataran Merdeka and Padang Merbok.

City police chief Comm Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa said the organisers have not got back to police to give notice on the proposed rally.

“Now that DBKL has not allowed them to gather at the two venues, and no other venue has been suggested by the organisers, we cannot allow the rally to go on.

“We will call the organisers to the Dang Wangi police headquarters to ask them to call off the rally,” he said yesterday.

Comm Tajuddin warned the organisers that swift action would be taken should the organisers decide to continue with the gathering.

Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah said recently that the organisers were informed that the dates fixed earlier for the rallies were free of other events. But now, she said a concert would be held at Sogo shopping mall on Aug 29.

The place was one of the meeting points for the rally participants on Aug 29 and 30.

Maria said the organisers were also offered alternative venues such as Stadium Merdeka, Stadium Titiwangsa and the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

In Kota Kinabalu, the state level Bersih gathering will be a carnival-like atmosphere, said Sabah Bersih chairman Jannie Lasimbang.

She added the police has been informed of the organiser’s intention to hold the gathering at Likas Bay beach area on the two days.

“We felt that Likas Bay would be a better spot for everyone to gather and have a variety of events in a fun way,” Lasimbang said.

He added that getting permission to gather at the historic Padang Merdeka in town would be difficult.

She said that the event would have programmes including entertainment, talks and discussions on various issues.
