JOHOR BAHRU – Police have confirmed that the explosion at a petrol station in Taman Mount Austin here today which killed a worker had no criminal elements.

Johor Police Chief Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the incident was also not connected to the fire at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) which occurred a few hours earlier this morning.

“There is no connection, I myself will go to the place (the petrol station) after this to look at the situation.

“There is a possible element of negligence there, we do not know,” he told reporters this afternoon after visiting the victims of the fire at HSA.

Wan Ahmad Najmuddin also urged the public including the media not to speculate about the two incidents.

“Please stop (speculating), they are still being investigated, and we do not know the real cause (of both incidents),” he said.

In the fire at the HSA’s Intensive Care Unit this morning, six people – four women and two men – who were among seven patients at the unit, died. The other patient was found safe and is still being treated at the same hospital.

Two hospital staff have also been sent to the Sultan Ismail Hospital while another staffer is being treated at the HSA for smoke inhalation.

Meanwhile, the explosion at the petrol station in Taman Mount Austin killed a 33-year-old male employee.

The explosion is believed to have happened at a natural gas storage tank used for vehicles at the station. – BERNAMA
