KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian squash queen and world number one Datuk Nicol David’s hope of retaining the Tournament of Champions (ToC) this year was dashed in a rather strange manner.
Nicol, competing in her first tournament since her record eighth World Championship triumph last month, ended her journey after losing her quarterfinal match to England’s Alison Waters in just 39 minutes, Wednesday.
The 31-year-old Penangite went down to Waters 9-11, 12-10, 7-11, 1-11 at the glass court mounted at New York’s Grand Central Terminal.
According to the tournament’s official website, www.tocsquash.com, Waters would meet Egyptian Nour El Sherbini in the semi finals after the Egyptian beat her team mate Nour Ell Tayeb 11-5, 10-12, 11-3, 12-14, 11-9.
In the first round victory on Monday, Nicol survived a shaky start against Australian veteran Rachel Grinham, 37, before prevailing 6-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7 in their 41st meeting.
The other semis will see another Egyptian, Raneem El Welily, take on Laura Massaro of England for a place in Saturday’s final.
