KUALA LUMPUR – The latest list of athletes for the Podium Programme, which is expected to be announced on Friday, will see several new faces and the dropping of athletes who failed to exhibit their best, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
“I will chair a high performance evaluation committee meeting tomorrow to approve the new podium list, and I am also led to understand that several athletes will be dropped and several athletes and teams added to it.
“I will accept recommendations and we will discuss together with the National Sports Institute (ISN) and National Sports Council (MSN) tomorrow. The Podium Programme itself must defend its recommendations why certain athletes are dropped and why certain athletes or teams are included,” he said.
According to Khairy the meeting tomorrow was to finalise the list of athletes who would be absorbed or ousted from the programme and would act as the final evaluation medium based on the athlete’s latest performance.
The announcement of the new athletes’ list for the Podium Programme would be made by its director, Tim Newenham a day after the meeting, he said.
He said this to reporters after heading a tree planting activity in a Mini Forest area at the Kuala Lumpur Sports City in conjunction with One Medal, One Tree Programme with the winners of gold medals at KL2017.
The Podium Programme is a special preparatory programme for the national elite athletes supervised by the National Sports Institute (ISN) aimed at helping the athletes to reap excellence at international sports festivals such as the Asian Games and Olympic Games. – BERNAMA
