Need To Step Up Pressure On Israel Over Illegal Settlement Policy

in Latest

NEW YORK – The international community needs to continuously exert pressure on the Israeli government to cease its illegal settlement policy, said Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman.

He said this should be done through all legal, diplomatic and economic channels.

“The settlement policy has been a stumbling block to the peace talks between the two conflicting parties (Palestinians and Israelis).”

Anifah said this in Malaysia’s statement at the meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) six-member committee on Palestine on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), here.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Dr Riad Al-Malki apprised the meeting chaired by OIC secretary-general Iyad Ameen Madani on the latest developments in Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif.

Anifah said Malaysia was gravely concerned over the escalation in crimes and attacks by Israel against the Palestinian people.

“Since our meeting here last year, the Israeli occupation forces have intensified their aggression which resulted in more than 200 Palestinian casualties, including 44 children and 15 women, while more than 15,000 Palestinian people had been injured,” he said.

Anifah urged the international community to unite to stop the Israeli regime from perpetrating these crimes, which have caused immeasurable sufferings to the Palestinians.

Malaysia, he said, firmly believed that efforts should be intensified to revive the peace talks.

“The two-state solution remains the most practical approach for both sides,” he said, adding that Malaysia commended efforts by France to re-launch a political initiative to support the Middle East peace process.

Anifah further said that Kuala Lumpur strongly denounced the increased aggression of the Israeli occupation forces in the compound of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and Israel’s attempts to alter the character and legal status of Jerusalem.

The foreign minister highlighted the fact that in Gaza, Israel had maintained a blockade on the territory, limiting the entry of essential goods.

“The Palestinians have been suffering for far too long. Thus, concrete action needs to be taken to address this situation urgently. We must not let Israel continue with its incessant attacks,” he said.

Anifah noted that as a member of the UN Security Council, Malaysia had been playing an active role in supporting the Palestinian cause.

“Malaysia remains steadfast in its commitment to the Palestinian cause and the restoration of the Palestinians’ rights and freedom,” he said, and called on other member states to continue extending their strong support and assistance to Palestine. – BERNAMA
