PUTRAJAYA – All eyes were on CIMB Group chairman Datuk Seri Nazir Razak when he walked over to chat with the Prime Minister at the Hari Raya open house of former premier Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Press photographers and even the guests clicked away on their cameras to capture the moment as the three men chatted for about five minutes.

Najib, who attended the event with his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, declined to speak to the press.

When reporters approached Nazir later and asked whether he spoke about The Edge to Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, he said: “I had a private conversation with my brother. I’m not going to share with you.”

Asked how were things in the family, Nazir replied: “Okay!”

When reporters asked for his views about the suspension of The Edge, he said he was standing up for freedom of expression.

He said his comments on social media, criticising the Home Ministry’s suspension of The Edge for its reporting on 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), was not to defend the publication in particular.

“It’s not for The Edge. It’s for freedom of opinion, freedom of expression, that’s all. This is not defending anyone, this is the principle of freedom of the media,” he said.

In an Instagram post on Friday, Nazir wrote: “The Edge is a pillar of our business community – big role in keeping us informed, honest and competitive.

Recent 1MDB coverage seemed outstanding but if there were flaws, then correct them or take legal recourse. I condemn the suspension and my thoughts go to all affected staff.”
